The Opener & Rotation, In Depth

A barrier healer with a deliberately thin damage kit. The opener is simple to learn. The job is in deciding every turn whether an Aetherflow stack buys damage or buys a heal. This page lays out the opener, the 1–2–3-minute cadence, and the trade-off the whole rotation hangs on.

01 · The Opener

Eleven GCDs, one shape

The opener is an 11-GCD sequence of Broil IV with Biolysis at each end. Its job is to put Biolysis at the start of the burst and refresh it on the final GCD so the DoT lands under raid buffs.

DoT
Dissipation-first or Aetherflow-first. Both are correct. Dissipation-first brings the faerie back about 15 seconds sooner, delays the 2,000 MP so less is wasted to overcap, and lines Aetherflow up for six Energy Drains at the two-minute window. Aetherflow-first is the flexible progression version: easier to cut drains, and easier to skip Dissipation entirely when the opening needs healing.

Pre-pull and weave rules

1.5s

Broil cast time

One oGCD after each Broil with no clip. Instant GCDs (Biolysis, Art of War II) take two.

~0.5s

Slidecast window

Movement starts about half a second before the Broil cast ends. Ping-dependent.

Ruin II

Last resort

220 potency against Broil's 320. Use it only when you cannot slidecast or Swiftcast.

02 · The Economy

Aetherflow pays for everything

Aetherflow is Scholar's only recurring MP source and its only oGCD healing budget. Energy Drain spends the same stacks, so every stack has two possible uses: damage or healing.

The arithmetic that decides a stack

Broil IV (1 GCD)
320
Energy Drain ×3
300
Energy Drain ×1
100
Three Energy Drains are 300 potency — less than one Broil IV. If a drain forces you or your co-healer to cast a GCD heal, you lose 320 potency and 900 MP for the sake of a 100-potency oGCD. Drain only the stacks you are certain you will not need.

Resource table

Baneful Impaction140 / 3s × 5 = 700 total · 5y AoERequires Impact Imminent. Use right after Chain.

Spending priority for stacks

Community priority order for stacks: Sacred Soil → Excogitation → Indomitability → Lustrate → Energy Drain. Reserve stacks for the healing your plan needs first. Whatever is left over is what you drain.

03 · Damage

Biolysis, clipping, and the burst

Biolysis is a 30-second DoT ticking 85 potency every 3 seconds, 850 in total. Compared with a Broil IV GCD it only pays off when it will tick at least four times.

Time left on the targetTicksPotencyvs one Broil IV (320)
9s3255−65
12s4340+20 (break-even)
15s5425+105
21s7595+275
30s (full)10850+530

The early refresh

Raid buffs are now 20 seconds long, so clipping Biolysis on the final GCD of the buff window is a gain. It aligns future refreshes with the buff windows instead of leaving them in dead time. The payback is about two minutes of uptime with one extra raid buff, and about four minutes with none. At a 2.49–2.50 GCD, put the DoT on the same GCD as your sixth Energy Drain instead, or it will miss the Chain window.

Multi-target thresholds

2 targets

Art of War II wins

360 potency against Broil's 320. Keep Biolysis on anything that will live at least 15s.

3–4 targets

DoT threshold rises

21s at 3 targets, 27s at 4. Past that, the DoT stops being worth casting.

5+ targets

Skip the DoT

Spam Art of War II and keep the Energy Drain window for the buff.

04 · Cadence

The 1, 2, and 3-minute loop

After the opener, Scholar runs a fixed loop: Aetherflow every minute, Chain Stratagem and Baneful Impaction every two minutes, and Dissipation every three. Energy Drain fits in only where it is free.

0:00 Dissipation (3 stacks) ── first Aetherflow stacks of the cycle
0:60 Aetherflow (3 stacks) ── spend over the next minute
2:00 Aetherflow + Chain Stratagem + Baneful Impaction ← the real burst
3:00 Dissipation (3 stacks) ── every other two-minute window
Biolysis every 30s ── refresh with 0–3s left, never drop it
Broil IV in every other GCD ── this is most of the job

Six-drain buff window

When the odd minute leaves stacks unspent, carry them into the two-minute window for six drains (600 potency inside the buff). That costs nothing only if the stacks were not needed for healing.

Dissipation grid

0 / 3 / 6 minutes lines up with every burst. 0 / 4 / 7 moves it onto a heavy healing phase. Decide which phases need the faerie and which need three more drains.

05 · Healing

The ladder: free, then Aetherflow, then GCD

Scholar's healing is ordered by what each option costs in damage. Use the cheapest option that covers the mechanic.

TierExamplesDamage cost
Free oGCDWhispering Dawn, Fey Blessing, Fey Illumination, Summon Seraph + Consolation, Protraction0 potency
Aetherflow oGCDSacred Soil, Indomitability, Excogitation, Lustrate100 potency each (one drain's worth)
GCD healAdloquium, Concitation, Physick, Manifestation, Accession320 potency (one Broil) plus MP

Burst-healing combo

Protraction, then a critical Adloquium, then Deployment Tactics. Protraction adds 10% to the shield and to the healing received. Deployment Tactics spreads the Galvanize half to the party, not the Catalyze half.

Shield and healing notes

Sacred Soil is not a shield

It is 10% damage reduction plus a regen (after level 78). Plan it as mitigation, not as shield HP.

Recitation

Removes the resource cost of Adloquium, Concitation, Indomitability, and Excogitation, and guarantees a crit. Preferred order: Indomitability (raid) → Excogitation (tank) → Adloquium (safety).

Seraphism

180s. Converts Adloquium to Manifestation and Concitation to Accession. Emergency Tactics recasts in 1 second. Lodestone lists it as incompatible with Dissipation.

Fairy ghosting

Summoning Seraph or pressing Dissipation discards any queued fairy command. Sequence fairy actions before the summon, not after.

These are the points where the sources conflict, or where a claim has no support in the Lodestone entry. They are listed rather than settled.

QuestionWhat we found
Chain Stratagem on GCD 2 or 3?Icy Veins (7.55 text) says GCD 2. The Balance's 7.4 diagram says GCD 3. Both produce the same eight-GCD window ending in the early refresh. Match your group's buff timer.
Broil IV 310 or 320?320 since 7.3. Older pages still say 310.
Three drains vs one Broil300 vs 320. One popular video calls drains "slightly stronger" — the arithmetic says otherwise.
Dissipation cooldown180s live. A widely shared rework proposal listed 120s — it was a suggestion, not a patch.

Recitation with Seraphism? Not stated on the Lodestone entry. An earlier draft said they were blocked; that claim is removed as unverified.

Lodestone is authoritative for potencies, recasts, and effects. The community sources cover how to play. Where the two disagree, the Lodestone value wins.
